Back to School

School started for Kylee and Dylan on Aug 31st.  Sadie started a week later after Labor Day.  Sadie slept in on that first day for the kids so I didn't get a picture of all three of them.

Kylee is in Mrs Rothwell’s class.  She has Kylie Paskett and Katelynn Simpson in her class.

But in fourth grade they do “rotations” where they switch classes for three subjects.  And in those rotations they have other kids in their group.  She has Sydni in her rotation group.  Why that group is different than her “home” class, I don’t know.  It doesn’t seem to be related to skill level.  Fourth grade doesn’t need ‘helpers’ like the other grades have so I haven’t had the opportunity to go in and help in her class or see much of what goes on in fourth grade.

She plays with Sydni during recess.  But doesn’t sit by her at lunch since they aren’t in the same class.  Considering how Sydni always has school lunch and always begs for Kylee’s food, that is a good thing in my opinion.  Kylee is happy.  It’s been a good year so far.  Even though her teacher says she needs to read nonfiction books.  It is difficult to find nonfiction books in her reading level (4.6-8.9).  Most of the books I’ve found that look interesting are too low for her.  But she’s still reading for fun at home.

Dylan is in Mrs Adams class.

This is her first year teaching second grade.  She lives in Cortland Ridge and I know her from there and she’s very nice.  Maybe too nice for Dylan…  I don’t know.  Dylan only has a couple friends in his class.  Most of his friends ended up in Mrs Cousin’s class, which makes me jealous.  I love her.  But he makes friends easily and he’s been happy.

As can be expected, we’ve had a few problems with his behavior.  Nothing major.  He will occasionally get notes sent home saying things like “he had a hard time staying in his seat today.”  Or “couldn’t keep his hands to himself.”  Things like that.  From what I can tell it is directly related to how much sleep he gets.  If he wakes up early or goes to bed too late, he usually gets a note sent home.  I wish I could help him out with that, but I beg and beg them to go to bed and they find every reason to put off going down.  At least one of the reasons now is that he wants to read.  He is reading like crazy!  His level is up to 4.9 or something.  But he read a 5.0 or higher book and wanted to test on it so the teacher adjusted his level and let him take the test.  He got 100%.  He also loves math.  He asks his teacher for more math pages.  He’s not doing anything hard in math yet, but I’m glad that he enjoys it.  I go help with his class for math every Friday, but I am out in the hall with two or three kids who need a little extra help, so I still don’t get to see much of what goes on in the class or how Dylan is doing.  But that’s okay.

Sadie is in Miss Deana’s class this year.  She has her cousin Tyson in her class.
She also has a few other kids from our neighborhood.  She misses Miss Kymm, but she loves Miss Deana too.  She even remembers all the Frogstreet Friends songs and Miss Deana is impressed!  I haven’t been in the classroom there either.  And I didn’t get to go on the field trip to the Airport today because of Kaden and his nap and I wouldn’t have been much help.

So far it’s been a good year!  Kids are happy.  And they even have a bit of free time after school.  Not a ton, but some.  They did soccer the first 6-7 weeks and now basketball has started for Dylan and Kylee.  But at least Kylee isn’t in gymnastics every day.

The term is almost over so I might update this with progress reports later, or just do a new post.  I don’t know.  I’m just trying to catch up a little if you can’t tell!!  I’ve got Halloween pictures to post soon too!  Then two birthdays and then more holidays so I am feeling a bit overwhelmed and wanted to get caught up!
