January 2021

Bad ideas of winter continues.  New Years Day we ran up Sunnyside.  Running up this hill is not fun on a dry road.  And waking up early to run on New Years Day is not great either.  But we did it and it actually wasn't that bad.  It's usually windy and freezing but this day was rather mild.

This was called Yeti Spaghetti.  It is held in Soda Springs, which is a long drive!  I guess it used to be in Island Park, which is also a long drive.  Anyway, we meet at this guy's house and all bring food, including spaghetti.  Then we run this trail that's like 6 miles in deep snow that was really hard.  Then we eat.  The weather was not bad for running, as you can see the sun was out.  The snow was squirrelly because it wasn't fresh, so your foot would move around.  Half the time your foot would not sink very far and it was fine, and then half the time you would sink to your knee.  I was exhausted and slow!  It was pretty fun to run downhill because it was easier to deal with the slippery snow.  It was also nice to chat with fellow crazies while we ate food.  But the temperature was too cold to just chill outside eating food after you stopped running.  He had a heater going in his garage but I was still super frozen.

This one was called The Long Night.  Dan started this a few years ago as a fundraiser for this group my neighbor Oliane started to support veterans when they come home.  He calls it the Long Night and the goal is to run throughout the night, but hoping people show up to run part of it with him so he's never alone.  It's an interesting format.  He runs a loop that's about 4.15 miles and he repeats that loop every hour.  For 12 hours (giving him 50 miles total).  So we all start on the hour and if you finish before the hour is over, you wait around for a bit until the next hour and start again.  I think I did three hours with him, so almost 12.5 hours.  The sidewalks were too icy so he did a little half mile course through the snowy grass.  Surprisingly I kind of liked this.  My only complaints was that it was late at night and though I tried to eat dinner early enough to digest it, my stomach just doesn't know how to handle food and working out in the evening.  So my stomach was super unhappy, but not enough to make me stop or anything.  Sherri came too for two of the hours and we had a good time.

We usually get together with cousins and Carol on Christmas Eve but I got Covid a couple weeks before and we didn't know if it would spread to my kids.  So we waited until after the new year and got together.  We played bingo again and ate lots and had fun.

The only problem was that Kylee's team signed up for a New Years tournament and I didn't expect it to go on the Saturday and it was the only day we could get together with family.  Her team was freaking out when I told them we were leaving.  So we promised them we would get back in time.  Her teammates were texting her all day.  We got back with at least 30 minutes to spare.  And it was a great game!  Kylee ended up scoring two goals and they won the Championship!

Lots of sports in January.  Kaden started swim club.  I really wanted him to be independent in the water!  He was pretty good, but this is how he started, with floaties on his belly.  He got so good!!  And he's completely safe in the water now.
Kaden finally got to play basketball!  We ended up at the YMCA, which I hate.  But we were too late for the Iona league (and they already had like 26 kindergarten teams!  Who knew so many people put kindergarteners in bball?)  Ryan coached them and Kaden did really well!  There was one other kid on the team that was quite good.  Otherwise it was rather hard and frustrating, lol.

Kylee's team had a fundraiser where they ran this clinic for younger kids every Saturday.  Kaden participated in the clinic and I think the team made a good amount of money!

Sadie's team got some sweet new uniforms.  They do well, especially since they added Finley to their team.  But they have some more work to do.  Their coach works hard with them.

Sadie participated in Ski Club, which she was really excited about!  Kelley's did it a little different this year, where we had to pay for all four days/nights at once along with lessons.  That was annoying because she didn't actually need ski lessons, though a more advanced lesson wouldn't hurt.  But I decided to make her try snowboarding lessons.  Especially because we had a board that worked for her, we just had to rent boots.  Plus, her friend Brynlee was on a board so it was just better.  She wasn't thrilled, but she ended up really liking it and stuck with it the whole four times!

Jen turned 40 so we had to celebrate!  Sherri and I made lunch and we decorated.
Sadie REALLY wanted to dye her hair turquoise.  I did not like the idea, but it is temporary stuff so I decided to let her.  But we had to give her highlights so it would show up.  I wanted it to just show up on the highlighted pieces, but there was no way to only put it on the highlights.  Anyway, I thought the blond highlights were really cute.  I didn't love the color, but she liked it.  It stuck around for a long time, just hanging on after many washes.  But that's okay.
