We thought it would be fun to make a trip to California and
Rachel was getting baptized this year so that seemed like the perfect
time. It worked out that they were able
to have her baptism right at our Spring Break.
So we planned a road trip!
While planning our trip, I talked to Sara about swimming
options and what not. She said it was
pretty cold in her area, near San Francisco so none of the public pools are
open. And the hotels have pools, but the
ones we looked at were not open during the cold months either. Bummer!
But then Sara said it might be fun for us to drive down south for some
of the time we were here. So we started
looking at that, and a road trip down the coast sounded fun!
So Ryan got to work booking hotels. Six different hotels. I got to work planning road trip activities
for the kids. I spent a lot of time
asking people for ideas, shopping on Amazon, packing it all in the car. And in reality, they used like 2% of what I
packed. All they wanted to do was play
on their phones, watch movies, read or listen to audio books on their
phone. They only had a few of the snacks
I packed too. They mostly just chewed
gum. Good thing I put in so much time
and money to get them awesome toys!
This is a breakdown of where we went and how much driving.
Day 1- Reno- 9+ hours
Day 2- Mountain View, CA- 4 hours
Day 3- Santa Cruz and back to Mountain View- ~1.5 hours
Day 4- San Francisco, through the city, and back to Mountain
View- ~2.5 hours
Day 5- Monterey Bay- 1.5 hours
Day 6- North LA- 5 hours
Day 7- Orange County- 1.5 hours
Day 8- Mesquite, NV- 7 hours (should’ve been 4.5 but
traffic!!)
Day 9- Home to Idaho- 8 hours
If you were counting, that is about 40 hours of driving
time! Give or take. But the kids really did quite well! It wasn’t too bad. Especially since Ryan did all the driving
until the very last day! He got
sick. I’ll get to that. Let’s start with day one.
We left around 9, and stopped around Twin Falls for some
lunch at Arctic Circle. But first we
took a short detour to Shoshone Falls.
We didn’t go in, we just stopped at the lookout for a minute. It was cool!
Then we hit the road for the long, boring drive again. We stopped in Winnemucca for dinner and
stretched. We made it to Reno early
enough that we let the kids swim. I didn’t
swim because I didn’t want to wash my hair before the baptism the next
day. But Kaden wanted to swim so he was
there with Kylee for a few minutes, giving me a major stress headache! But Ryan eventually came back and took
responsibility for him. I just took a
few pictures. And stressed about
sleeping arrangements since the hotel did not have a crib we could borrow.
Kaden slept with Ryan, Sadie slept with me, and Kylee and
Dylan both slept on the floor. They did
great. No need to stress. We got packed up and headed towards Sara and
Dan’s.
Driving over Donner’s Pass was interesting. There is so much snow!! We talked about the Donner party and how grateful we are that we were not born a hundred years earlier with the pioneers. We stopped for lunch at some point. Ryan chose this sandwich shop, something to do with firefighters. They didn’t have any gluten free options so I ran across the street to Rubio’s and had myself a shrimp taco.
We were stressed about being late with traffic and everything, but we made it with plenty of time. Enough time to go to the park for a bit, actually.
Then when we got to the church, they had to fill the font still so we hung out for awhile. I was asked to lead the music, which is not too big of a deal, but I'm not very good at reading music! And they threw in an extra song while we were waiting for the font so yeah. Cheryl gave a really great talk, incorporating the story of her and Sara and the kids at the beach when Rachel was digging a large hole and leaning into it when the sand collapsed on her head and was suffocating her. Sara realized something was wrong and ran to save her. It was close. Rachel was pretty pale and blue. The Holy Ghost is such a blessing!
They asked Kylee to give a prayer, and when she agreed I don't think she realized it would be in front of everyone at the church. But she she gave a thoughtful prayer and it was wonderful. Congratulations Rachel! 8 is great!
