Dylan turns 10

Dylan having a late birthday always makes me feel like he's been that age for awhile.  I've thought of him as a 10-year-old for a long time.  Mostly because lots of his friends were in Webelos with me already.  But Dylan finally had his birthday, which he had been planning for months and months, trying to finagle us into giving him his present at the first of June instead of waiting.  He was pretty sure he was getting a metal detector.

His actual birthday was on a Sunday.  He got to open presents before church.  He got all the Pringles flavors he wanted to make a YouTube video, a Laser Tag game, and yes, a metal detector (that he hopes to use to find antique coins worth money).

And after church we had cake with cousins at Grandma and Grandpa's house.  He chose an ice cream cake this year, which was a fun change.

The day after his birthday, we had his party.  We invited five of his friends to Lava Hot Springs with us.  They are a fun bunch, and I enjoyed driving with them.  My family and sister-in-law's family and mother-in-law met us there too so that was fun.  Dylan still felt like it was his special birthday but the other kids got to enjoy it too.

The boys spent a long day playing hard and had a blast.

Dylan is a fun kid.  He moves through the world with purposeful energy, hard and fast,  always with a plan of what he's going to do next.  When he's given a job, he does it quickly (not always well).  If you ask him to do something that can't be done quickly, he will put up a fight.  Like math.  He hates math that takes forever.  He hates mowing the lawn because it takes too long.  But ask him to do the dishes or clean a room and he whips through it.  In the past I've thought he was a Type 1 personality (fun-loving, high energy) but I'm starting to think he might be more of a Type 3 (determined, high energy)  You know, I'll just attach the quick chart right here for reference.

He makes lots of plans about how he's going to make money, get more views on YouTube.  The things he does are not necessarily just for enjoyment.  He does them for a purpose.  Things that some kids this age care about, don't matter to Dylan.  He does not care about clothes or brands of shoes at all.  I asked him if he wanted a new bike for his birthday since his is a little small and he said, "no, mine works just fine."  This is soooo different than Kylee, who wants new everything, even if it's a pencil or a bar of soap.

Dylan loves soccer, minecraft, fires, and playing with his friends.  He has decided his loathing of tomatoes has now ruined pizza for him and he refuses to eat it unless we order it without sauce or with a white sauce instead.  He won't even use ketchup anymore.  And he has a crippling fear of spiders, which is comical when Sadie has to kill a spider on the wall so Dylan can relax.  He also has a fear of heights, which he doesn't apologize for or feel embarrassed about.  He's not a pushover, and he wouldn't even let himself be bribed or pressured into any ride he didn't want to do (Cannibal and Rocket).  He's opinionated, high energy, thoughtful (as in he thinks about things and asks questions, not necessarily about doing nice things for people, though he does a lot of that too), funny, and good company.  Love him!
