May 2018

May was a full month!  I mean, May is always busy but this year there were a few extras.  Soccer is always a big part of may, but I will get into that later.

Kylee participated in The Battle of the Books this year.  They had four books to read before each battle (three battles total).  She was on a team with Sadee and Garrett.  For the first two battles they did not miss any questions!  I thought they were going to win the whole thing.  But there were two groups so I didn't see how the other group did, and there were a couple teams there that hadn't missed either.  And on this last battle, there were many questions missed by all.  Still, I was surprised that they didn't even get second or third place.  But I guess that's what happens when you have sixth-grade-itis in May and don't put in enough effort.  She read the books, but she didn't go to any of the practices and probably read the books too soon so she forgot some of it.  They still did awesome and I'm glad she did this, it was a fun event.  Fifth and sixth graders were invited.  It would be fun if Dylan did it next year too, but I'm thinking he will opt out.

Somehow I got put in charge of Teacher Appreciation Week.  And left to my own devices to take care of it all, lol.  As it approached I figured I would be contacted by someone from the PTO or the lady that has done it the last few years but no.  Eventually I made some calls and got some information and set off on my own.  Immediately I recruited two or three or four helpers.  Things are much easier to accomplish when you have the right team.  For starters, a woman named Nicole had volunteered to help with decorations. I didn't know Nicole at all other than she was pretty quiet at the PTO meeting.  So I didn't know what she had in mind.  Turns out she is AMAZING!!!  Decorate she did, along with all sorts of other goodies.  She knows how to make things PRETTY! She was a great partner to have in this.  I also contacted Heather Maddux, who is the music teacher so she really shouldn't have had to do the work for this, but I needed her input.  She had inside information about things that teachers like, and she's also amazingly creative.  She helped come up with the theme, and when I said it was overwhelming to stick to a theme, she completely took over that and came up with "royal" names for every teacher and themes for each day.  She also wrote up the flier that went out to the kids' parents with all sorts of royal terms and it was super cute.  The only other problem was the budget.  I am really great at throwing a party, but not so great with a budget.  Eventually I decided it would be worth it to get Massage Therapists that used up most of our budget, even if it meant I might be paying out of pocket for a lot of stuff.  I was hoping other people would volunteer to help cover some of the costs, but wasn't really sure how to ask for it.  In the end, it all worked out so great!  The PTO upped my budget by $50, Sam's Club donated $50 of supplies, and Broulim's took 40% off the cost of the sandwiches.  I didn't realize how much I had been stressing about the money until it all came together and I didn't have to spend $150 of my own money, lol.  It's not that we don't have the money, but this isn't what I want to spend that much money on, plus I am doing all the work, I shouldn't have to pay that much money too.  Anyway, all in all it turned out to be a great week!  We got many, many compliments.  And I got to know Nicole more and she is great.

The sixth grade track meet was something I had been looking forward too.  I'm not sure why, I guess because I love racing even though I would never do well at a track meet because I am not a short-distance speed runner.  Kylee signed up to do the mile.  Nobody else in her school wanted to do the mile!  Lol.  She said it was the only one that seemed challenging.  She's so funny.  I love that she doesn't shy away from hard things.  The mile is hard!  It might not seem like it would be, but it's much easier to run really fast for 100 meters.  The mile is a full 7+ minutes of torture.  But Kylee did great!  She ended up taking third out of like 12-15 I think.  She even took a few walk breaks (I'm trying to break her of that habit, but that's just how some people do it.)  But she ran that mile in 7 minutes flat!  I was so impressed!

My kids have never shown any interest in participating in the talent show at school before.  This year Sadie came home the first day saying she definitely wanted to sing in the talent show!!  She wasn't quite sure what she wanted to sing, or who to sing with, but that wasn't as important.  She ended up with Faith, one of her favorite friends.  And they sang "A Million Dreams" and they HAD to match which means I was at Target with Sadie the night before trying to come up with something she liked that would work.  But they were really cute.  Kylee had been working on a duet with her friend Lizzy for their piano recital so Lizzy asked her if she wanted to play it for the talent show too.  Kylee said "sure" and that was that.  They did great also.

Dylan has become very interested in coin collecting and is begging us to take him to the bank to exchange pennies constantly.  He's done research to find which pennies are valuable and has some friends he has roped into doing it too.  He had me driving him to the coin collector shop, which happened to be closed, which is good because they didn't actually have anything valuable anyway.  They thought they did, but when I did a bit more research I found they were mistaken.  Anyway, it's a fun habit (and much better than Minecraft all the time).  When we were at a bank using the machine that counts your coins, the manager told us what we needed was the coins from the machine that people bring in.  He sold us this big bag for $50.  Dylan was happy!  We went in to exchange it and found out they aren't really supposed to do that so we can't do it anymore, though.

Duet Piano Recital.  Sadie played the Moana song with Vicki and she was so cute up there!  If I hadn't been so rushed curling hair for dance immediately after, I would've had her practicing a bit more so she was more fresh.  She made a couple mistakes and her little feet would kick with nerves.  She's so cute.

Kylee and Lizzy's song was really good!  I loved it.  I think everyone else was impressed too but I didn't get to hear any feedback because we had to leave for dance right after they played.

Ryan and I celebrated our 15th anniversary by going to Sushi Time, the new all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant, which was yum!  And signing up for a Chapman League, ha ha.  I told him I would love to play with him if he wouldn't be embarrassed of me.  He said it was all for fun and we wouldn't win anything anyway.  It has been fun!  And frustrating.  Golf is just frustrating.  I'm trying to put in some time so I can improve but I honestly don't know if practice helps in this game...  The good news is that Ryan is SO good that he can usually salvage my really bad shots.  On one of our first rounds, Ryan his his ball through a small tree that had two birds in it, and one of the birds just dropped.  He nailed it in the back of the neck and killed it immediately.  It was pretty gruesome.  Nice "birdie".

I have been anxious to get out on the trails, so I got Ryan to come run Palisades with me one morning.  It's so beautiful!!  It was a bit wet and muddy this early in the year, but we are tough so we didn't mind.  The river was FLOWING.  So much rain and snow this year and last year.

As if Teacher Appreciation Week wasn't enough giving of my time, I figured I would help out with Field Day too.  Mostly because Nicole was in charge of it and she did so much for me.  But also because I had the time so why not?  I was out on the field with Dylan and the fourth graders helping with their track events.  That was fun.  Dylan ran a 400 relay with some friends.  Then I went inside out of the heat to do Bingo with Sadie and the first graders.

I also volunteered for the Sixth Grade end of year party.  They get something more special than just field day.  I put together superlatives for everyone in the grade.  I had the kids fill out their voting forms and then I organized it all and made up certificates.  It's probably more work than it was worth, but they seemed to enjoy it.  And I got to hang out with the sixth graders one last time before they head off to middle school and the teen years.
