Fall Sports

Sports!  There's always drama...  So, Kylee played for Hillcrest obviously.  Her and Averi were put as JV captains.  Which was annoying, because they should've just been Varsity.  But they didn't have enough players so they needed a lot of them to play JV too.  So they ended up playing both halves of every single Varsity and JV game for like 2/3 of the season.  Kylee would come home completely exhausted after playing two games in a row, multiple days a week.  Her coach ended up putting her as forward after she scored three goals in one game (hat trick).  That makes it sound like they had a good team, but let me assure you there were only a couple teams that they beat.  And Kylee doesn't love forward because she feels a lot of pressure and people yelling at her.  But she did it.  She scored goals in a lot of the games, both Varsity and JV.  There are rules about how much one person can play.  They are limited in halves they can play.  And Kylee had played every single one of both JV and Varsity.  Until they played Thunder Ridge, which is a team her friends are on.  Then her coach chooses that game to sit her out.  Technically it's not a conference game so it doesn't matter as far as State.  But Kylee was super frustrated.  She did the same thing with Bonneville where she has lots of friends.  It was really frustrating for Kylee because her coach would not tell her ahead of time that she wasn't going to play.  So Kylee could have brought food and warmer clothes to sit on the bench and watch, but she didn't know.  Anyway, the team didn't go to State and we are hoping that next year she can just focus on Varsity because it was really hard on her.  By the end she was in AWESOME shape though.  Her knees have been hurting a bit though.

The soccer float for Homecoming

Kylee came across this giant poster in school one day after a game where she scored a couple goals.

Dylan played soccer for Sandcreek.  But he was getting really frustrated because the coaches were not putting him on defense that much because they were worried about him fouling and giving free shots.  He does not like forward because he has to sit and wait for someone else to send him the ball and it doesn't happen much.  It's not his strength either, I mean I'm sure he could get better at it if he tried, but he wants to play defense.  I told his coach to help him learn to be better at defense, but Dylan had a bad attitude when his coach tried.  Dylan came home saying his coach was being super hard on him and singling him out.  His coach was just trying to help and do what I had said.  So it wasn't really a relationship that was working.

In the meantime, Ryan had a conversation with one of the football coaches because Kaden played with his kid.  The football coaches had tried to see if Dylan wanted to play football after watching him run track, but I knew Dylan would never give up soccer.  Well, he was coming home from soccer frustrated every day.  So we talked to him and he decided to show up to football practice and just try it out.  It wasn't ideal because these boys had been practicing together most of the summer, not to mention for the last three or four years.  And Dylan doesn't know football at all.  But there are a ton of boys in his deacon's quorum that play football and lots of kids he knows from school and they were all really welcoming and encouraging.  He had to practice with the helmet alone for a couple weeks so he couldn't really do anything with contact at practice.  Then he got pads and learned how to hit and stuff.  He's big enough and physical enough that he did fine.  But he doesn't know the game and he has a lot to learn.  They need him though, so they are all very encouraging and want him to play.  He had to juggle both soccer and football, which meant he would miss at least a day of each of them each week.  And then his foot started bothering him so much that he couldn't even sprint very fast, which is the whole reason they wanted him for football, and his strength in soccer.  So it was a learning year for him, and he's still not sure he's ready to give up soccer completely.  But this year they had three teams for boys soccer at Hillcrest.  Chances are he will be able to play on the freshmen team if he wants to.  But he doesn't practice, and he just doesn't seem invested.  I don't know that he would make JV or Varsity in the future.  Football on the other hand, they don't cut anybody.  They definitely have a freshmen team.  And they want Dylan.  As soon as the fall season ended, he started going to early morning weights with all the other high school football players.  It's quite a commitment and he's doing well.  The problem with high school football is that it starts as soon as school ends and goes all summer long.  It's a big commitment for sure.  But I'm hopeful that he will learn a lot and get a position other than special teams. Especially if he can actually run (we took him in and he has severs disease which I knew already, but he told him to do stretches every night and that should help so hopefully it's better by track season).

His soccer team won their division in the final tournament and were undefeated the whole season so that was fun too.

Sadie...  her team from last season fell apart when her old coach decided to go over to Renegades.  I tried hard to convince people it was a bad idea without actually badmouthing them to everyone.  But in the end, more than half her team left with him and went to Renegades.  So Sadie and the few remaining players started practicing with all the other girls their age left at BYSL.  Sadie had a bad attitude about the coaching when practice first started, and I believe she didn't show her skills that much.  By the second week she was trying harder because she heard they were going to split them by skill level.  But she still ended up on the B team, with NOBODY that she knows.  I was livid.  The other girls from her team are not better than Sadie.  I consider her equal to two of them and better than two of them.  I found out later that some of it had to do with people who knew the coach Travis, which makes me even more mad.  Travis put his whole previous team on A team (our team beat them when we played, so obviously there was more talent on our team). And I was just so mad that none of Sadie's old coaches were there to stand up for her.  Her old coaches loved her and knew how good she was.  One girl from her old team went to C team along with a couple neighbors Sadie knows but hasn't played with.  And everyone else she knew ended up on A team.  I messaged the Travis and complained and he said he would give them opportunities to play up with A team but the only time he invited her was for a tournament where they would play on a Sunday so we turned it down.  He did ask one other time at the end of the season but we were in Florida so she couldn't.  She ended up really liking her coach Karri and she liked the girls once she got to know them.  And they all practiced together so she still saw her other friends.  But it was rough at first.  She felt bad, lost her confidence.  I would watch the games with a bad attitude about how much better she was than everyone else (this isn't exactly true, there were a few decent players on her team, but i was jaded.)  In the end I told her to work hard and prove herself.  Perhaps in the Spring she will be put on the A team.  And in June they will tryout for the club teams and they take 17 players instead of just 12 so she will most definitely make that team as long as she works hard.

She had to play against Renegades, her old friends.  And that was fun and hard too.  No hard feelings, she still loves them all.

Kaden said he didn't want to play soccer anymore.  I feel like he got that attitude because of the indoor camp I put him in and perhaps he would feel different if he were playing outside again in real games, but I didn't push it.  Ryan has made it clear that he doesn't really want another soccer player in the family, lol.  Basketball is definitely his sport, but that doesn't start until later so I signed him up for flag football.  I figured he needed to try it at least.  It was a K-2nd grade league and there were a few 2nd graders on his team and the difference in skills was obvious.  Kaden isn't as rough and physical as Dylan or even Sadie, so I really didn't think he would like it that much.  And at first he didn't love it, but by the end he said it was his favorite after basketball.  I swear part of that is just because he knows Ryan likes it.  But that's okay.  He had fun. We ended up with a few friends on the team.  The games were always the same time as other kids' soccer games so I didn't get to see too many of them, but we made it work.  He's not the fastest or the most aggressive, but he did pretty good.

Basketball started in October, and this is where Kaden shines.  He handles the ball so well!  And he is fast and makes a lot of baskets.  Ryan coaches and our neighbor Terry helps and they work hard with these boys!  Some of them have a long ways to go, but we are hopeful and we are still keeping our eyes open for new boys that want to play and show promise.  (Sadie started bball in October too but I guess I don't take very many pictures...)
