August 21 was a Sunday. Dylan and Sadie were going to a youth bishop's fireside at the church. Sadie was driving her friend in the golf cart and Dylan hopped on the back to catch a ride. A few minutes later Dylan came back in the house saying Sadie through him off the golf cart and he hurt his wrist. I asked if she at least gave him a ride back home and he said, "no".
Let's take a little side note here and explain how the relationship between Dylan and Sadie is. They can't stand each other. I hate to say that, but there's not really any other way to put it. They can't be in the same room together without being at each other's throats. The fact that Dylan was getting a ride with Sadie was surprising, but it's because we told him he could walk or hop on with her. So the idea that Sadie drove recklessly enough to toss him out of the golf cart was surprising, but not unbelievable. I was pretty upset. I drove over to the church to get her side of the story. She said she offered him a ride but he refused (typical Dylan, he holds grudges) and she was distraught and worried about him. She explained she wasn't going fast, and she had just went around a puddle and he had fallen off. He was standing on the back and only holding on with one hand. The scene was starting to become more clear to me. It is likely that Dylan was standing on the back, probably not holding on too well, and not able to see that there was a puddle in the road so he wasn't expecting the turn to the left, followed by an immediate turn back to the right. He stands by his claim that she was driving recklessly. But moving on...
I went back home to assess his injury. He had some scrapes and bruises on his body but his right wrist was in bad shape. It looked off. I tried to touch it and he jerked away and wouldn't let me get close. So we headed to the urgent care to get it looked at. This was days before I was supposed to leave for Africa and I really didn't want to be exposed to sick people, but you do what you have to for your kids. We were there for awhile. Sunday nights are pretty busy at Urgent Care. But eventually they took some x-rays and concluded it was definitely broken, in two places.
You can see a small black line on the right side of the lower left hand bone (scaphoid). And the second picture shows a little break on the left side of the wrist. Neither of them look like much, but they were very concerned about the hand. They told us we needed to see a hand specialist ASAP because broken hand bones can lead to arthritis later on, etc. There was a small chance of surgery needed, but looking at that x-ray I didn't think that was likely. It's a tiny break. I'm sure it hurt a whole lot though.
We didn't get done until 11pm. They put a sugar splint on him until the swelling could go down for the real cast he would get.
I was supposed to go on an all day hike the next day, I woke up and got dressed for it and I just didn't feel good about leaving. I was leaving for a long vacation to Africa in a few days and I just felt like I should be there with the kids that day, even though there wasn't much to do for Dylan other than set up his appointment with the hand specialist (which turned out to be easy because I have quite a few Dr friends in our ward). Ryan had to take him to that appointment because I was leaving for the SLC airport that day. He was able to get his cast on.
You might be wondering what's with the other splint? Well... A few weeks later, shortly after I returned from Africa, Dylan was playing school soccer and took a fall. He landed on his left wrist. I didn't talk to him immediately after his game because I was going straight to Kylee's game but he texted me when he got home and said, "I think I broke my other wrist. I don't need to go to the doctor cuz it's just a waste of money, I'm gonna wear my old splint for awhile and it should be fine." I was like, sounds good to me. I don't have time to go sit in Urgent Care again, lol. But then I told him if it was really broken he can't play soccer without a cast. I asked if it was swollen and he said, I don't know cuz I don't have anything to compare it to. Lol. Eventually I texted his pediatrician and he told us they could x-ray it at his office. It was kind of funny because he said the x-ray looked good but he would send it to the ortho office. When they called they told me "we need to make an appointment for a cast" so I assumed they thought it was broken. I was really stressing about him having two casts! How can he wash his hair? But they took some more x-rays and decided it was not in fact broken and the splint is fine to wear until it feels better. Thank goodness.
It was so unfortunate that this happened right when soccer season started. He couldn't practice or play because it hurt too bad and he didn't have a cast yet, then he got sick (all my kids got sick in August, all like a week apart) and missed a practice. So when he felt better and had a cast, he went to his game and he didn't get much playing time. I tried to explain that you always sit more if you missed practice and he said, "I couldn't go! Did they want me to come get everyone sick?" I tried to explain that I didn't say he didn't have reason, but nonetheless, he missed. It's hard for him to understand. The first game we wrapped it in bubble wrap but then they were told that wasn't good enough. One of his coaches pulled out some foam sheets and coban and made him a nifty little glove. So we had to put that back on for every game. It was really frustrating.
After like 7 or 8 weeks we had a follow up and he was put in a custom splint instead of the cast, just to make sure the hand would heal completely.
He actually got his cast off and braces off the same week! Finally free.
