Sometime in September, I took Kaden with me to Walmart. Up until this point, he had been a fairly easy child at the store. Sometimes he would want to walk instead of ride in the cart and that got annoying as he hopped on and off the rails of the cart, or pushed the cart into shelves. But he was generally a good kid. This particular day, I had his birthday on my mind. And I had wanted to get him a Lightning McQueen car since he loved the one at his friend's house. So I took him to the toys and we walked into the CARS section... And he was in heaven. And he wanted everything. And he never wanted to leave. He really had his eyes set on this "big Mack truck"
And I thought it would be great for his birthday, but I wasn't going to buy it for him for no reason. So I had to pry it out of his hands while he screamed and he only stopped screaming because I let him have the little Lightning McQueen and also got him some Cars underwear.
From then on he was obsessed. He kept saying things like, "for my birthday we get the big Mack truck at the restaurant." He said that for a couple weeks. Eventually he learned Walmart instead of restaurant. Another day I needed to take him to Walmart so I said we could go say hi to Mack. He looked and played with things in the aisle, and then screamed when we had to leave again. Ugh.
Anyway, he got to have his Mack truck early because Grandma and Grandpa Anderson leave for Arizona a few weeks before his birthday and they give presents out before they leave. So he FINALLY got it. Then he started talking about other stuff at Walmart. When I tell him we need to go to the store, his eyes get all bright and he says hopefully "Walmart??" But no, I can't take him to Walmart anymore.
On Thanksgiving day (after his birthday) Dylan say a card and check for Kaden from Grandma Carol. I had already opened the card and was trying to decide what to do with the money, but Dylan holds it up to Kaden and says, "look! Grandma sent you money, and you can use it to buy more cars!" And from that moment on, he wouldn't stop asking to go to Walmart. All day long. He got tired and whiny at Thanksgiving dinner without his nap and he was whining "I want to go to Walmart!" My family all thought it was hilarious that he was begging for Walmart. Oiy. I did eventually take him to Walmart to spend his check since Dylan had got his hopes up. He tried to choose a little track that was kind of lame, especially considering we have similar tracks at home that are bigger and cooler, though not Cars brand. And he's getting a cool track from Santa so I had to figure out how to get him to choose something else or deal with him screaming for a week. Luckily he found another box that had a kind-of track called "Piston Cup Garage". Done. The kid was happy as can be and he sat and played with that little garage for three days straight.
Anyway, back to his actual birthday... He had a hard time when Sadie had her birthday and he didn't get to have his for another week. He would wake up and say, "I'm ready for my birthday now!" He thought "birthday" meant his Cars presents. It was a rough week waiting and waiting. But finally his day came! It was on a Saturday. He woke up to balloons and presents but we had him wait until Kylee woke up to open his presents. He was really patient.
When Kylee FINALLY woke up, we all watched him open presents.
Everything he got was from the Cars movie. He had already gotten the actual Cars 3 movie a week before (another tantrum at Walmart, so he got the movie early). But he got the Cars he has been wanting (Cruz, Jackson Storm).
His face is the best!
I got this big track from my neighbor who was getting rid of it. It's for Shake 'n Go cars and it's fun, but the cars are all a little slower and maybe that's because they are years old. Oh well. All the kids had fun with it for awhile.
I put Kaden down for a nap and tried to finish up his cake. I had plans to take him and Sadie to Kid's Town because he LOVED it the first time we went and I thought it would be a good way to celebrate his birthday. But when Sadie and I woke him up from his nap, he only wanted to play with his toys. He did NOT want to go anywhere. Well, it's his birthday and if that's how he wants to spend it, so be it. Sadie, however, was sorely disappointed. She hadn't been to Kid's Town and she really wanted to go. So I had to deal with her little meltdown.
Speaking of Sadie and meltdowns, she made him a little book for a present. Her and Dylan are always so excited to make gifts for other people. It's adorable Dylan gave Kaden his pinewood derby car. He even colored eyes on the windshield so it would look more like Lightning McQueen. So Sadie made him a book with a story about Lightning and Cruz and Mater and a ghost, because Kaden loves ghost stories. It was really cute. BUT she didn't give it to him earlier when we were waiting to open his bigger presents like she should have. I didn't realize she had it for him or I would have encouraged her to give it to him early. So she waited until all his presents were in front of him, and then tried to give him this book. He had no interest in the papers when he had shiny new toys in front of him. Sadie's feelings were VERY hurt. She tried and tried for about an hour while Kaden blew her off for his new toys. She cried and cried. It was kind of heartbreaking. He did eventually let her read him the story and all was well with them again. But yeah, sad. Here's a few pages.
The cake was fun! And hard. I wanted to make it cute, but didn't want to use food dye. I tried to pick up some natural food dye at the store, but they only had pink and yellow. Well, green is supposed to be pretty easy. Just spinach! So I tried it. But it took a lot of spinach juice to actually make it green. And then the frosting was all runny. I just used store bought (organic of course ;)) so I wasn't really sure how good it would taste anyway. I put the green stuff in the fridge and decided if all else failed it would just be white instead of grassy. But it thickened up in the fridge. And I decided I didn't care if it tasted a little funky. I was going for cute instead of tasty. I asked Ryan to stop and pick up some yummy ice cream so we would at least have that to eat if the cake was not great.
I think it turned out cute! I kind of hate piping frosting. But I did it and it's not perfect and I didn't have a grass tip for the green so I just had to wing it. But Kaden was happy. Look at that face??
The cousins came over to play and celebrate with us.
It was a good birthday. The following week the kids were out of school for Thanksgiving break. So I took them to Kid's Town on Monday.
Dylan wasn't too interested in playing and said he wanted to sit and read so I didn't even pay for him, lol.
But then the owner(? manager?) asked if he wanted to see her turtle and so he went back and saw her turtle and millipede. And Kylee started a chess game with him until some oblivious kid came over and started moving pieces around right underneath them. Some kids...
So now my monkey is three. I have mixed feelings about that! He will leave nursery in a few weeks. Crazy! I am excited for him to be old enough for us to do more, but still love his baby voice and his cuddles. Just going to soak in the moments of the present right now.
