Sadie and Darby Wind Caves

Sadie has said she doesn't like hiking.  Well, that doesn't really fly with our family.  I had a theory that she would enjoy it more if she wasn't trying to keep up with Kylee or Dylan, and if she went somewhere cool like the wind caves.  I had been trying to find a time to take her in 2020 but it never happened.  So this summer I made a plan.  We got a later start than I had originally wanted, knowing it was going to get hot.  But that's okay, there's a lot of shade and we had a lot of water.  I packed us both packs of water and sandwiches and candy.  And we headed off.

We had a fun time.  And also struggled too.  Sadie is not the same as my older kids.  In all honesty, she's more like I was at her age (think youngest and only girl that didn't do sports...)  But we kept on trucking and we only got lost once.  The cave was cool.  Lunch was fun.  She whined a lot about "why did they have to make it so steep? Why does it keep going up and then down?" But we made a game of finding every color of flower (which we did, the wildflowers are all over) and she snacked on Mike n Ike's.  I can't forget to mention how her shoe slipped off as we were trying to leave the cave.  It fell into the water that was heading down to the waterfall.  I had one hand holding onto her hand helping her up onto the rock so I couldn't exactly lunge for it either.  Luckily it didn't go anywhere and I was able to reach down and grab it.  We laughed about how horrible it would've been to have to walk back with one shoe, and if we would've found it at the bottom of the waterfall, etc.

The way down was rough.  It was hot and she was tired.  She wanted to stop and rest sometimes.  I just wanted to get done. Also the horse flies would bug us every time we stopped.  I tried singing songs with her, she wasn't happy.  So let's say the last couple miles was rough, even though it was downhill.  BUT we finished and we were glad we did it.  Sadie has done just fine on all the trails we have done as a family recently.  But these bigger ones are a bit harder for her.  I know she will toughen up when she grows a little.  She's a bit like Dylan, when she decides to do something, she's tough and works hard.  But if she's not in the right mindset, life is miserable.  I'm glad we did it and I had fun spending one-on-one time with her.  And this trail is so dang breathtaking.  I never get bored of it.
