Ho'opi'i Falls hike with kids

There are so many adventures to be had on Kauai!  Some of them require a little hiking.  It is so beautiful and amazing though!  This particular trail was supposed to be an easy 1.8 miles that Julie had just taken her kids on (there were a few other families from our neighborhood staying in Poipu this week and Julie and I talked a lot about what we were doing).

Dylan opted not to come on this hike because he had gone swimming in the ocean that morning and cut up his feet on reef and they were hurting him.  Ugh.  But we got the other kids to come and they only had a bad attitude for a little bit of it.  (I have to give the gold star to Sadie for complaining the least about anything we did on this trip.  Kylee didn't necessarily complain but it wasn't hard to tell she wasn't thrilled. In her defense, she really didn't feel very well.  I'm really happy she came along.)

Julie's family must be a little more adventurous than I gave them credit for, because the waterfall they were jumping in was not that accessible.  Her kids are just barely older than my kids and I was surprised they all climbed down this rock wall to and she swam across with her phone to take videos of them jumping in.  Sadie and Ryan swam but Kylee and I stayed up top and watched.  Kaden climbed down with them but then fell in and got a little shaken up.  There wasn't a very easy way to get out of the water and back up the cliff.  But nobody died.

But the trail kept going to another waterfall and a rope swing, so on we went.  It ended up being about 3 miles total, and we got a little lost on the way out.

Even getting down to the rope swing was sketchy and not very straightforward.  I swear everything in Hawaii feels treacherous and not well marked.  I assume they don't want to mark the treacherous trails to avoid people less capable attempting them, but still.

We all had a lot of fun on the rope swing.  There were a couple of mishaps.  This guy who was trying to help everyone by holding onto the rope, he was kind of showing off and tried to backflip off of it.  He landed face first and cut his head open on a rock.  It really wasn't very deep except right underneath the rope and he went too far out.  Also, head first is not a great idea.  He seemed okay though.  They had a towel they used to press against his head and they headed out.  We never ran into him again so I assume he made it.

I went off the rope swing a few times but the last time my leg somehow slid through the loop so it jerked me upside down.  It was fine, I pulled myself up and out of it but I got a pretty gnarly bruise all along my thigh from it.

It's always easier going back up.  Kaden got pretty nervous on the way down.  And if it had been muddy, it would have been much harder for sure.  I'm sure there are many people who get injured or trapped/stranded in Hawaii all the time because of all these adventures, lol.  But the kids did great and we had fun.
