Bike For Kids

Last weekend we went to this Bike For Kids event.  I received a flyer in the mail from EIRMC advertising it.  It was EIRMC's family fun day / caretaker reunion / open to the public carnival.  Something like that.  But it was combined with this Bike For Kids event to raise funds to help provide disabled children with special bikes.  Ryan knew the guy organizing the bike part of the event so he was on board with going.  Normally he's not a big fan of spending our whole Saturday on things like this.  But I thought it looked fun and it was for a good cause.  There was a four-mile family bike ride, which we decided we couldn't do since we didn't have a way to get our larger bikes there.  They were also doing a one-mile color run, and since Kylee has been asking to do a color race with me, I thought it would be fun.  Plus, it was only one mile so Sadie and Dylan had no problem doing it, and Kylee hasn't been running much so it was better for her than a 5k.  They also had "Criterium Races" for each age group for the kids so we brought the kids bikes and got them all set up.  It was really cute.

Preschoolers went first.  I am thinking they may have had Kindergarteners with the Preschoolers, but I may be mistaken.  Anyway, Sadie talks a big game.  She was saying she was going to win and another little girl next to her was saying SHE was going to win.  So I told Sadie to get up front for the start if she wanted to try and win.

Well, she didn't win but she came in 3rd!  Right behind two little boys.  She did so great!

The water bottle had a coupon for Idaho Mountain Trading and a ton of tootsie rolls.

Next up was Dylan.  I put him in the 1st grade group because when I registered they were still in school.  I didn't feel too bad since he's young enough to be going into 1st.  He also got up front ready to compete.

He did great!  He missed the balloon marker he was supposed to go around so he turned and started heading back for it, then got turned around and eventually got back on track.  Even with that, he still took 1st place!  By quite a bit!

I talked to Kylee beforehand, now that she had just seen both kids win a prize.  I explained that she's racing against bigger boys and it's hard to compete against them and it's all about having fun.  She said, "I know, my bike isn't very fast anyway.  And if I do go too fast my chain falls off."  So I knew she wouldn't be too upset if she didn't win.  But she did great!  I think she got like 5th or something.  Afterwards all the kids said their legs hurt a little- they pedaled hard!  And Kylee said, "I'm actually surprised my chain didn't fall off because I was going pretty fast."

The color run wasn't until later so we headed over to the carnival.  The girls got their nails painted.  Dylan did ring toss, bean bag toss, and whatever other game he could find.  He was racking in the prizes.  They did a fun little obstacle course.  We had to wait in line for the mechanical bull, but both Dylan and Sadie rode it and had fun.  The face-painting line was quite long and slow so we skipped that.  It was really nice that it was super crowded.  I was told by my friend Nicole who was there that it actually got a lot more crowded later in the afternoon after we left, which is good for them because I wanted the day to be a success.  But we were able to walk right up to the free lunch and get some Texas Roadhouse pulled pork and a roll.  The kids had hot dogs and soda and chips (typical free food).  The Teddy Bear Clinic was really cute!  Each kid was given a teddy bear that they named.  Then they pretended the bear had been in an accident and they took them through the process from the emergency room, to radiology for x-rays, to lab for blood draws, to the operating room where they got mask and hat.  And they got to keep the bear of course.  It was fun.

After that we headed towards the tent for the race again. We hadn't heard them announce anything about the color run, but it was supposed to start at noon so we figured it would be close since it was after noon by then.  Turns out it was going on.  So they handed us our color packets and we started up the sidewalk following the arrows.  Ryan took Kaden and the stroller with my purse to the car and ended up missing the fun.  Of course he didn't really want to get hit with color.  He doesn't see the fun, just the mess.

I had let the kids attempt to sleep outside on the deck the night before (which didn't happen, Dylan came in around 10 because he was up trying to pet the cat so Ryan told him to go to his own room- to which he didn't even argue, and Sadie and Kylee came in a little later and ended up sleeping in their sleeping bags in the living room because it was a little chilly outside) so the kids were all very tired which meant there was fighting and nobody was listening or obeying.  So we were happy to head home after we tried to brush ourselves off after the run.  We all thought it was a really fun day, though!  Up until all the fighting started :)
