I like to celebrate holidays. I don’t do anything too crazy for most
holidays, but I like to do SOMETHING that makes it feel special. So for Memorial Day I thought it would be fun
to have a barbecue. Ryan and I have talked
about having people over for something like that. So I talked Ryan into buying us a new grill
that works much better than our very old one.
And I started planning. We
thought of a few families to invite, and our kids threw out some suggestions based
on their friends. It has been raining a
ton with a lot of thunderstorms and the forecast wasn’t looking good for
Monday. So when I sent out the invites,
I made sure to include that it was all depending on weather. We don’t really have room to accommodate that
many people inside. But it started to
look like decent weather so we went for it.
I bought burgers and hot dogs, made some punch, and cut up
some watermelon. I asked everyone to
bring something. And I got some waters
in a cooler. We invited six smaller
families, all with younger kids. Not
really on purpose, but it’s easier to know that their kids won’t be bored since
they’re the same age as ours. The
Fosters didn’t make it, they were getting back into town that day. But we had the Pawleczyks, the Ferneys, the
Burninghams, the Shumways, and the Pasketts.
It was a good-size group and we had a lot of fun. I tried to snap a few pictures, nothing that
really shows the group though.
It did rain earlier in the day but passed. We got the food cooked and everyone was
mostly done eating when it started raining again. The kids didn’t seem to mind the rain.
Ryan turned on our fireplace and we enjoyed the atmosphere
on the deck.
Ever since Sadie got a balloon animal at the Kid’s Fair, we’ve
been talking about how Ryan can make them.
So I finally bought some balloons right before Memorial Day. We decided it would be a fun thing to do with
the kids. Boy were we right. It was a big hit. We had all the dads making animals and
swords. We used up two bags of balloons.
I had a really good time visiting with friends, even though
it got really loud with all the kids. We
are thinking we will invite couples over more often, maybe just one couple at a
time for FHE or something. Or possibly
two couple. I don’t know. It’s kind of hard to have a get-together
without inviting the whole neighborhood because you don’t want anyone to wonder
why they didn’t get invited. So we are
thinking of doing another smaller one and inviting a couple families that we
hadn’t invited this time. We’ll
see. Our deck works well for
entertaining so we may as well.
I am not used to having school after Memorial Day. It was strange to me that we still had two
weeks! I was so ready to be done with it
all! The kids were riled up every night
wanting to keep playing outside. Which
means they weren’t getting enough sleep, and I was dragging them out of bed in
the morning for school. Which means they
were cranky and snapping at each other.
Kylee gets snappy, Dylan gets to where he just can’t focus and doesn’t
listen or care about what I say. Sadie
gets super emotional and sassy and pretty much a nightmare. So yes, the last two weeks were not fun for
me.
But finally the last day of school was here! It was only a half-day.
And I wanted to have a party for my kids to invite friends,
but then I decided that sounded like too much work. If we had something fun for them to do over
here, like a super cool outdoor play area, or a hottub or something, I would
have. But I couldn’t think of a fun way
to entertain them. So instead I decided
to take my kids on a picnic to the park.
They thought it was a great idea.
When we got to the park they asked how long we could
stay. Kaden had just slept quite awhile
and I fed him right when we got there so I told them we could stay as long as they
wanted. They loved it. I’ve never seen them have so much fun at a
park and just with each other. Sure,
there was some fighting and revoking-of-privileges. But when Kaden decided he was done and I told
everyone we needed to go, they were disappointed. It had been nearly two hours. The weather was probably 70 with slight
overcast, which made it super pleasant.
It was a fun day.
Dylan's favorite thing- finding sticks and digging in the dirt.
Kaden loves to eat hair. My hair, Kylee's hair, any hair.
And he loves to eat my face.
Later that day, they couldn’t wait to try out their
workbooks. School hadn’t been out for a
full day yet and they were already looking for more work, lol.
I’m determined to keep some order in my house. I can’t handle the messes and the fighting
and the constant begging for electronics or friends. So I am making them do some schoolwork and reading,
as well as cleaning up after themselves, every day before they take off for
friends. Dylan has lost electronics for
the whole month of June so I don’t have to worry about that. Kylee doesn’t care about electronics, other
than her ipod occasionally just when she’s waiting around for something. And Sadie only wants the ipad when there’s
nobody else around to play with. So that
means we haven’t dealt with electronics yet and potentially might not have to
for awhile.
Kylee had the last week of school off of gymnastics, which
was nice. Starting this coming week we
have gym for Kylee three days a week, golf for all of them three days a week,
and t-ball for Sadie once a week.
Nothing too crazy, but it all starts next week. I’m hoping to have time to enjoy the sunshine. It’s been nice, but still rainy off and on
and not too hot. But this week will be
in the 80’s. I’m ready. Bring on the tan!
