I signed up for this race last minute just for fun because my friends run it and I like it. Kylee did it with me last year and she would've liked to do it with me again, but she was been too busy with dance and soccer to train for it and I think she had something that morning.
This is the first time at a race that I've had a problem. When I pulled my bike out of my car, my tire was completely flat. Not a good sign. I pumped it up and it seemed like it was holding air so I hoped maybe I could get through the race, but after a few minutes it was clearly getting flat again. I have a spare tube and stuff but last time I had to change it, it took a long time and I knew I wouldn't have that much time before the race started. I asked Tammy, who is the race director but also a good friend, if there was a bike specialist there (lots of races have them) and she was like, oh I have a tire you can use. She sold me this bike years ago and she has fancy race tires for it. She called her daughter and she brought me the tire and I just had to switch them out. Thank goodness it was the front because I don't know how to do it with the gears and chains and stuff. Anyway, crisis averted!
I haven't been swimming a whole lot. Or biking really. This was just for fun. So when we got in the water and started, I looked back after a few minutes and I swear I didn't see anybody behind me. There were a handful of people around me that I could see but I thought I was at the very last. I hate being last!! That was frustrating. So I hurried out on the bike and tried to take off pretty fast. I passed a handful of people, most of them women, and only got passed by a couple guys. I was wondering where everybody was! I set out on the run right with a few guys and I decided to hang with them as best I could. I ended up passing one of them and thought I might try to catch the other one but it was not meant to be. I kept telling myself I would increase my pace at the turn around. No, maybe when there's a mile left I can increase... No, I'll just sprint once I hit the lake entrance, lol. It's hard! But I finished and Tammy was there and got me a finisher shirt and then she said, are you our first woman? Was I? How is that possible? Well, for starters Tammy and Hidee weren't racing. And Takara was doing the race at the Snake River that her husband was putting on, along with some other fast women I'm sure. Why would they have a race the same day? Good question. That's a long story and not that interesting. Anyway, I somehow won! There was a lady ahead of me the whole time but I must've passed her on the run without realizing it. I saw her Instagram post because she tagged We Tri Strong and he said she was ahead the whole time and then she got turned around on the run and she couldn't recover after that. I felt really bad if she somehow ran much further than she was supposed to. But her run pace said 10:30 or something and mine was 8:25 so I guess I don't feel that bad. Anyway, that was a first for me. Pretty cool! (Obviously I wasn't actually last out of the water, I just thought I was one of the last. My results say I was 15 out of 37, so top half!) I got 1st out of 20 women, 11th overall out of 37.
