Catarata Uvita and Surf Lessons

Uvita is just a bit further south than Dominical and it's another small area with dirt streets and lots of little shops/restaurants.  The big draw is the waterfall, even though it is small.  The cool thing is it is a slide.  You have to pay an entrance fee but it wasn't much and then there's a short hike to get down to it.  But the area is a fun place to hang out on a hot day.  There's a ladder next to the waterfall (mostly made of rebar with some rubber on some of the rungs but sure hurts the feet!).  And then you can lay in the water and slide down.  It was fun!  And we went multiple times.  A little downstream there is another pool area with a platform people were jumping from.  I would love to hang out here on a lazy hot summer day.  We stayed for awhile but we had plans for later that afternoon so we left.

We attempted to go to a restaurant that Ryan's cousin Maja had recommended (she spends a lot of time in Uvita and has just bought a house there).  But they were only open a few days a week and this day was not one of them.  We had wanted to try this ice cream drink anyway so we went to the deli that served the Churchill and got food there too.  The Churchill is yummy!  I need to recreate it at home.

We had to go back to Dominical for our surf lessons!  After watching us surf in Hawaii, Ryan decided he wanted to try too and I was excited to go again.  This was NOTHING like my experience in Hawaii.

It was so hot, we had to stop in the middle of the lesson to rehydrate.  Also the waves were completely different.  These waves were small (because we were at a small beach, Dominicalito) but relentless.  And the water was shallow, unlike the bay in Hawaii.  It was exhausting.  There was no chilling on your belly on your board.  You had to fight the waves by lifting the nose of your board and get beaten in the face by waves, just trying to make your way out to waist-deep water.  Then the instructor (a white guy from Michigan actually) would tell us when to jump on and push us.  We would ride the wave but we couldn't stay on until it died because then we would be too shallow and risk breaking the fin.  So we had to bail off early.  But it was ankle deep water so it hurt.  The movement of the waves made me fall on my hands and knees, or on my tailbone.  It was just so different.  It was still fun, but not as fun as before.  They told me when we took a drink break that it is better to try to lay back down on the board instead of just jumping off, and that made more sense.  But it's not always that easy.  So I would try to squat down and end up falling off anyway.  I had scrapes and bruises afterwards.

It was beautiful though!
